Types of residential solar
1. On-grid
An on-grid or grid-tied solar system is connected to the utility grid. This type of system allows excess power generated by the solar panels to be sold back to the grid, earning credits or money for the homeowner. Similarly, any power shortfall is met by utility supply. A grid-tied solar system does not require a battery backup, which makes it less expensive and easier to maintain.
2. Off-grid
An off-grid solar system is not connected to the utility grid and requires a battery backup to store excess energy for use when there is no sunlight. This type of system is more expensive than a grid-tied system, but it provides energy independence and is ideal for remote locations or homes that are not connected to the grid. An off-grid solar system requires more maintenance than a grid-tied system, as the batteries need to be regularly checked and replaced. Also, these are more expensive than grid-tied systems.
3. Hybrid
A hybrid system combines the pros of both on-grid and off-grid system. It is connected to the grid via net meter (like on-grid) and also has a battery backup (like off-grid). This translates into you using electricity without disruptions even during power outages. A battery backup helps store the extra power generated by the solar system during peak hours. These systems cost more than on-grid solar arrangement.
